Through the ‘Finding the Fallen’ project primary and secondary schools from Norwich, West and North Norfolk, Thetford and Great Yarmouth took part in three days of outreach with military historian Neil Storey. The students visited their local war memorial and used online research resources to uncover local soldiers’ roots and fates. They learned of the conditions experienced on the front line by wearing costumes and handling original objects. They also discovered how life was changed back at home by examining first-hand accounts, diaries, letters and postcards.
The students responded creatively to the outreach by producing several styles of written work, including poetry and letters and artwork such as photography and hand stitched postcards. They also created a Roll of Honour for their local memorial and the Norfolk soldiers who died on the first day of the Battle of the Somme and in the Second Battle of Gaza. These outcomes were included in the project exhibitions and can be viewed in the image gallery.
